Are construction workers in California covered by workers compensation?
Most construction workers are covered. State law requires nearly every employer to carry workers compensation insurance. This applies no matter the team size. It covers full time, part time, and seasonal workers. If you work for a construction company or a licensed contractor, you are usually protected.
There are a few exceptions. Sole proprietors and self employed workers do not have to carry this insurance. If they have no employees, they usually are not covered when they get hurt. One trade stands apart. All roofing contractors must carry workers compensation in California. This rule applies even if they work alone.
